New Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid Makes Global Debut

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid, India’s largest carmaker, has taken the wraps off its first hybrid model – the all-new Ertiga Hybrid. Slated to launch in India in 2023, the electrified Ertiga promises improved fuel efficiency along with Suzuki’s renowned affordability. This marks a major milestone for Maruti Suzuki’s electrification roadmap.

At a press event in New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki revealed key details about the Ertiga Hybrid before its market launch next year. “The introduction of our first hybrid electric model represents a significant advancement for Maruti Suzuki,” said Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO. “With rising fuel prices, the Ertiga Hybrid will allow Indian customers to enjoy the benefits of a hybrid while keeping the purchase price accessible.”

New Hybrid Powertrain Targets 26 km/l Mileage

The highlight of the new Ertiga Hybrid is the hybrid powertrain delivering an estimated 26 km/l (over 61 mpg) in fuel efficiency. This gives a significant boost over the standard Ertiga’s mileage of 20.51 km/l (48 mpg).

The hybrid system couples a new 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This provides torque assist when accelerating for smoother, more efficient power delivery.

The electric motor draws charge from a lithium-ion battery located under the passenger seats. Regenerative braking helps recharge the battery while driving. This allows the engine to turn off when the car is coasting or idle, reducing fuel usage.

Mr. Ayukawa stated: “With rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, hybrid models present an optimal solution for India. The Ertiga Hybrid offers a no-compromise path to electrification at a reasonable price.”

Familiar Ertiga Design with Hybrid Badging

Visually, the Ertiga Hybrid looks nearly identical to the standard version aside from subtle badging. The exterior sports a chrome grille and swept-back headlamps flanking the Suzuki logo.

At the rear, vertical taillights stretch to the D-pillars above a chrome accent strip on the liftgate. The Hybrid also comes equipped with stylish alloy wheels and side skirts.

Inside, the Hybrid features the same dual-tone cabin with faux wood and silver accents. The dash houses an updated touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Comfort takes priority with various storage solutions and cup holders scattered throughout the cabin. Ventilation is enhanced through rear AC vents and fast cooling ducts.

No Compromise on Space or Safety

As a compact MPV, practicality defines the Ertiga formula. The Hybrid maintains the standard model’s strengths in this area with space for up to 7 passengers across 3 rows.

There’s abundant headroom even for tall passengers and ample legroom in the middle row. Accessing the third row is easy thanks to the one-touch slide and recline function for the middle captain seats. With all rows up, the Ertiga still offers over 200 liters of boot space expandable to 550 liters.

Safety takes center stage with the latest generation Ertiga. All variants come equipped with 4 airbags along with electronic stability control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and rear parking sensors. The chassis uses Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform for improved rigidity and impact absorption.

Mr. Ayukawa reaffirmed Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to safety: “We aim to democratize passenger safety in the mass-market segment. The Ertiga Hybrid offers protection for all occupants whether in the front seats or last row.”

2023 Launch Targets Eco-Conscious Buyers

Maruti Suzuki plans to launch the Ertiga Hybrid in India around mid-2023. Offering electrified driving without the range anxiety or price shock of a fully electric vehicle gives the model a unique positioning in the Indian market.

“With the Ertiga Hybrid, customers can reduce fuel costs and carbon footprint without sacrificing performance, space, or affordability,” said Mr. Ayukawa. “We will monitor response and consider expanding the hybrid range if consumer demand persists.”

Industry analysts expect a positive reception of the Ertiga Hybrid among eco-conscious buyers who drive long distances daily but don’t require the range of pricier PHEV or EV options. Its accessible price point and proven Ertiga formula should find strong appeal among families and fleet operators.

The Ertiga Hybrid’s arrival coincides with growing environmental awareness and the rise of hybrid models globally. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and other brands now offer hybrid options as a bridge to full electrification. With skyrocketing fuel prices across India, providing greener solutions makes smart business sense according to experts.

As the Indian government offers incentives for hybrid and electric cars, Maruti Suzuki aims to lead the charge toward cleaner transportation. Mr. Ayukawa concluded: “The Ertiga Hybrid kickstarts a new journey for Maruti Suzuki. We are committed to building a sustainable mobility future that doesn’t compromise on affordability”.
