India EV Charging Stations: A State-wise Exploration of Nearby Public EV Charging Infrastructure

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India is rising steadily, with more automakers launching new models and governments providing incentives to buyers.

However, a major factor determining mainstream EV uptake is the availability of adequate public charging infrastructure. This article examines the current state of public India EV charging stations in each state and union territory of India.

• Public charging stations provide vital infrastructure for EV owners to charge their vehicles when away from home.

Andhra Pradesh

• Andhra aims for 69 public charging sites and 600+ chargers by 2024.

Arunachal Pradesh

• Arunachal currently has very limited public EV charging infrastructure.
• Under FAME-II, 40 stations and 138 chargers sanctioned across the state.

Rajasthan

• Rajasthan plans public EV charging stations at all its petrol pumps.

Sikkim

• Sikkim currently has no public EV charging infrastructure.

Tamil Nadu

While India EV Charging Stations infrastructure has come a long way, progressing from just a few dozen chargers five years ago to a current count of over 2000 chargers.

However, despite this growth, the availability of charging points remains insufficient in light of the increasing sales of electric vehicles. To address this challenge and expedite the expansion of charging stations in India, a concerted effort is required.

• Huge investments by central and state governments under existing schemes.
• Incentivizing public sector oil companies to install chargers at their fuel stations.
• Public-private partnership models to install chargers at scale.
• Innovative business models like battery swapping, solar-powered charging, low-cost slow chargers.
• Mandating charging infrastructure in building codes, especially commercial complexes.
• Standardization of charging connectors across automakers.
• Differential electricity pricing to incentivize charging during off-peak hours.
• Creating consumer awareness about locating nearby chargers.
• Mechanisms to incentivize EV users to share chargers.

India’s EV charging stations, as the nation targets a 30% electric vehicle (EV) sales penetration by 2030, there is an urgent need to significantly improve the availability and accessibility of public EV charging infrastructure.

This will play a pivotal role in driving large-scale adoption. While governments are pushing various programs and schemes, concerted involvement of automakers, power sector companies, startups, real estate firms and other stakeholders is crucial to build robust pan-India charging networks.
