EV Battery Plants in USA
South Korean battery producer SK On Co. and American Automaker Ford Motor Co. are jointly building mega EV battery manufacturing plants in Glendale. Glendale is about 84.5 km south of Louisville in the US state of Kentucky, USA. It is a 6.28 million-square-meter construction site.
Over 800 engineers and construction workers are working hard to “get moving” to match the schedule for the EV battery manufacturing plant. The mega plant will be the biggest EV battery plant in the USA for such a facility on a single site.
SK On Co Ltd is in the business of battery manufacturing. The Company is a major producer of car batteries and other related products. Whereas Ford Motor Company is an American multinational. They are in automobile manufacturing having headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, USA.
BlueOval SK Battery Park
The EV battery manufacturing project is part of the $11.4 billion investment by the joint venture of two companies SK On Co. and Ford Motor Co. The joint venture was announced in September 2021. The Ford Motor Co. in association with SK Innovation Co., Ltd. plans to build a dedicated EV battery manufacturing complex, with an investment of $5.8 billion called BlueOval SK Battery Park.
The joint venture BlueOval SK (BOSK) will build two EV battery plants in Kentucky, USA, and a third one in Tennessee again in the USA.
Once the EV battery manufacturing project will be completed, the plants will have an annual production capacity of 129 gigawatt hours (GWh). This will be sufficient to power about 1.2 million units of the Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickups. Ford aims to produce 50% of its global vehicles, fully electric by 2030.
The Kentucky, USA twin plants will start production in the first quarter of 2025. However, the third plant in Stanton, Tennessee, will be ready by 2026.
SK Group South Korea
It is just to add that SK Innovation is an intermediate holding company of SK Group. The SK innovation is engaged in petroleum, alternative energy, and oil exploration. Whereas SK On is the battery-making unit under SK Group.SK Group is the second-largest conglomerate in South Korea. The group aims to become the top player in the world over the next decade.
